A note for Shawn: I had a chance to speak with John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, Disney/Pixar's Creative Chief and President, which helped me feel at ease regarding the slate of new Pixar sequels. Before Pixar was bought by Disney, they had a public feud with Michael Eisner, regarding their contract and rights to produce sequels. If Pixar signed with another studio, Eisner was ready to build a separate division dedicated to pumping out Pixar sequels. Under Eisner's system, the creative staff suffered because of endless script revisions and non-creative executive decisions that were believed to be the best choices to sell the film. If Toy Story 3 was developed those conditions, I agree, the result wouldn't be worth watching. Since then, Eisner was replaced by Bob Iger after a share holder revolt by Roy Disney. Iger was responsible for creating the conditions that would allow Pixar to be bought by Disney which included bringing John and Ed on to manage both creative teams at Pixar & Disney. Pixar would remain unchanged and would continue to be a director driven studio. The current director, Lee Unkrich, has been with Pixar since the first Toy Story so he has a vested interest in seeing things done right. If you don't like his movie, at least you know that it's his direction that doesn't work, rather than the feeling of a studio milking a cash cow.

This podcast was very entertaining. I loved the discussion of the acute sequelitis that has afflicted large portions of the entertainment industry. It's too bad that more of that money and energy can't be directed to entirely new IPs.
Jeff: I saw Spinal Tap on the Colbert report and I agree with you 100%. It was so sad to see these talented guys deliver such a tired, by the numbers performance. Spinal Tap has become the very thing that they once parodied so skillfully.

I would like to reply to N'Gai's remark about the Batman movies (reboots, etc.).
I don't think something like The Dark Knight speaks to a bankruptcy in creativity. Think about it: the basics of the story may be already intact, but the director, actors and everyone else involved obviously are bringing an amazing amount of creativity and inspiration to those works.
Like King Solomon said, there's nothing new under the sun. So, it's not like anyone really needs to reinvent the wheel with art. They just need to put their heart into it for it to be worth something -- I think, anyway.

N'Gai, actually the Alien prequel does have an interesting writer, Jon Spaihts. He has written one unproduced script called Passengers which was on the blacklist (list of best unproduced scripts in Hollywood). The script is about a guy on an interstellar craft who accidentally wakes out of cryosleep a century before everyone else. I read a praising review of the script at chud.com a few years ago, but unfortunately it has apparently since disappeared.

Speaking of books and movies, you mentioned both the movie and the book No Country for Old Men, which I've read and seen. No Country for Old Men is probably my favorite movie, competing only with maybe the HBO movie Wit (which I also read) and Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman.
Shawn, you mentioned that it's not the book that matters but trying to get across a point, and that's one of the reasons that I think No Country for Old Men is such an incredible film. The Coen Brothers did a near verbatim translation of the book but filmed it in a way that demystified Cormac McCarthy's version and even surpassed it, except on the point creating an original idea. McCarthy's book just seems so heavy with violence that the message gets kind of lost. It's almost like he wasn't sure what he wanted it to be--that is, a gritty crime drama or a deep philosophical juxtaposition of hopes and reality. I actually finished it, but it was the last book I really wanted to stop reading. It was too bad, I was looking forward to it but I felt like I got a lecture more than a confession.

I don't understand how you guys can annihilate some internet 'writer' -- who probably still lives in his mother's basement -- for writing laughable sentences, yet churn out equally laughable ones yourselves. I just found that particular sentence to be extremely irritating.
I know some will argue that there is a difference between writing words that are going to be published, and shooting the breeze with a bunch of guys on a podcast, but come on.
Frankly, people that substitute normal words for the word ‘shit’ every few minutes, sound quite demented to me. It is just more surprising to hear it done on every podcast by a guy of N’Gai’s background and caliber.
Anyway, on a more cheerful note, I thought it was another fantastic podcast. I really do enjoy listening to all of you.

The Captain America arc is actually very well writte and has been planned out for years. The writer is Ed Brubaker , BTW not Brian K Vaughn.
Yeah, the story sounds totally ridiculous, but what comic plots don't? The story on the page is extremely well executed, though probably loses some impact if you come in without having followed the arc. The time travel notion is totally a Brubaker homage to Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. He even purposefully uses the phrase "Steve Rogers has come unstuck in time" to make the inspiration clear to any Vonnegut readers. Anyway, I dig the series, but I can see how it probably seems totally ridiculous to some.

I personally don't believe the US will be returning to the moon. Neither political party is truly interested in seeing it happen, and the Ares project mentioned earlier in comments will probably be gutted in Congress to only ensure a vehicle to travel to the International Space Station and nothing more.
Sorry for the negativity, but I've heard it all for the past forty years about how Apollo was a waste of money that should be used to cure the world's ills, etc etc. Well, we haven't been to the moon for 4 decades and we don't exactly live in Utopia the last time I checked.

Loved the Aliens discussion on this show guys. Those movies are special to me. I think the first two are unmitigated classics that reflect well on each other. The third annoyed me when it came out but I've come to appreciate it for having balls while also being pretty true to the first two. The fourth one is hard to defend, outside of the art direction. I hope they make the prequel scary. I think it's natural to assume we'll see the story of the Space Jockey and the humans will probably be doomed Weyland Yutani executives or prospectors. It could be cool, certainly has more merit than a lot of the other prequel/reboot/remake projects going around.
