Hey all,
Great show this week. I particularly enjoyed the L4D conversation and just wanted to toss in a thought or two of my own..
First off, referencing the Lombardi interview that Robert mentioned—I'd really welcome L4D2's pursuit of context (rather than "story", being that semantics is likely the key here).
Probably my favorite parts of L4D have been the moments before any mission, in the safe room, reading the impromptu notes, warnings and scrawls of those that supposedly came before: a perfect way to weave some narrative fragments into a singularly focused environment.
(On a side note, they're eerily similar to the few twitters now escaping out of a proud but trodden Iran).
Secondly, it seems that the New Orleans/Katrina-esqe setting might be, in-part, an ordered response to Capcom's arguably thoughtless handling of race and social trauma.
At any rate, FEMA = CDC zombies; shit is so cool. Can't wait to see Valve play this out.

While I have not played L4D, I have enjoyed the impressions included in this episode. The prospect of a future zombie-fest episode gets my vote. It will be a blast to hear this panel dissect the Walking Dead and other staples of the zombie genre.

Loving the 'cast. You're pretty much a podcast dream team when you all get together, all bringing something slightly different to the table.

With all of the talk about Robert Kirkman's "Walking Dead", do any of you read his other big series, "Invincible"? I used to dismiss it as too candy-colored and plastic when compared to TWD, but now I almost think it's a better series overall. And not to try to derail your podcast into being too comics-focused, but how did you guys feel about the finale to 100 Bullets?
Re. Motion control stuff.
Natal looks most interesting since it can be used in conjunction with a regular controller. Like the DS which has both buttons and the touch screen.
Done right, Natal should allow for simplification or more precisly lowering of the barrier of entry for complicated games.
For instance, stuff like voice recognition could take over functions of buttons.
Example: you could make an FPS that uses just the sticks and the triggers. Want to switch to another weapon or grenade or item? Just say what you want to use ('grenade', 'rifle', 'gun').
Enviroment interaction can be done that way too, walk over a diffirent gun and say 'switch' if you want to switch out or say 'yes' when the onscreen prompt asks if you want to switch. Same with stuff like 'place charge', 'open', 'use', etc.
You can just say the verb rather then have to translate it through an intermediate medium of a button press. Just reverse the cause & effect of a character shouting 'reloading' in Left 4 Dead.
It's even advantagous to hardcore gamers. The immediate advantage for a start is that you won't need to take you fingers off any of the inputs that require faster then speech response.
But also in a game with lots of options. Like Bioschock. Which causes some difficulties when you don't have keyboard shortcuts 'cause all you've got is a controller. A good voice system and you won't even need all the buttons on the controller.

N'Gai: Listen to any five minutes of yourself talking in this and count the number of times you say "you know." I think you'll be surprised and probably embarrassed. Robert and Shawn do it too, but I feel like you're the worst offender. Oh, make Jeff do this with one of the podcasts he's on too. Actually, make anyone who puts themselves in front of a microphone do it.

Wobbles: personally I don't want a structured, read-from-script podcast, as the whole value in something like this is having knowledgeable industry people get together and bounce thoughts off each other freestyle. A few "you knows" are unavoidable in this case, and I could care less about them when we're getting content this honest and well-considered.
Lotrax: Not saying I want a scripted show. Just listen to how frequently people insert "you know" into everyday conversation where there's no reason at all for them to put it there. I'm saying people shouldn't use it in everyday speech either, and it's even worse when you press record and intend for thousands of people to listen to it.

Before I talk some trash, let me first say I have enjoyed listening to most of these men for years and I'm glad to have them together. That being said... I's it just me, or does N'Gai Croal completely ruin this show. He is longwinded, makes boring points, and is not funny in any way. I know this is harsh... but seriously... he is tanking this podcast. In summation, More Jeff & Robert, less N'Gai.

Croal is thoughtful, measured and almost always motivated by some kind of positive or constructive thought, even if using it in criticism. I find him a pleasure to listen to. I enjoy the entire cast, but he and Jeff Green are the big attractions to listening.

Nice podcast guys, though the sound quality was even worse than last week.
Last week, you had two guys speaking at the same volume, while you had the third podcaster speaking half as loud. It was a touch irritating to constantly handle the volume control, so in the end I just decided I'd listen to two of the three.
This week, there were just more "Optimus Prime" problems, where everyone sounded like an Autobot at some point.
As for Ngai Croal, I think his smooth voice brings an important balance to the mix.

well after yet another recommendation i went and picked up the walking dead book 1 while i was on break in canberra (Australia's capital territory for the geographically impaired) and just happened to walk into a comic book store. Its my first comic/graphic novel so i'm looking forward to the experience- unfortunately however, i left the damn thing at my friend's house in canberra, shortly before returning home to sydney... Smooth.

I would be totally cool with it if N'Gai said "fuck it, I'm going home." I re-listened to some earlier episodes and to me it's fucking torture every time N'Gai decides to speak. You don't have to go on for five fucking minutes every single goddamn time you open your mouth!
Craig, I for one don't mind how long it takes N'Gai to form his thoughts. It's better than the canned/cliched responses you get on a lot of other podcasts. I don't know what you're expecting to achieve with your comments, unless you're just trying to stop this podcast getting made. It's not like someone can transform into an expert speaker overnight.
